The Steele County Attorney makes decisions that affect victims, defendants, law enforcement, families, taxpayers, and the entire community. Those decisions benefit from experience and an understanding of the justice system from more than one perspective.
M. Esther Sherman brings a broad legal background to the role, including experience as a prosecutor and years representing individuals and families in private practice. Her career has given her firsthand experience with the people, agencies, and difficult decisions that make up our justice system.
Experienced Attorney • Former Prosecutor • Committed to Public Service
For M. Esther Sherman, protecting the community means using the power and resources of the County Attorney's Office where they are needed most. Serious and dangerous offenders must be held accountable, and incarceration is necessary when public safety cannot otherwise be protected.
But effective prosecution is not measured by how many people can be charged or convicted. M. Esther Sherman believes prosecutors have an equally important responsibility to ensure innocent people are not convicted and that charges should only be brought when the evidence can prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
That also means recognizing that not every case requires incarceration. When public safety can be protected through Community Corrections, restorative practices, treatment, supervision, or other appropriate interventions, those approaches can hold people accountable while reserving the most punitive—and costly—responses for individuals who cannot safely remain in the community.
This approach protects victims, constitutional rights, public safety, and taxpayer resources while allowing prosecutors to focus their attention on the cases that pose the greatest threat to the community.
“The prosecutor is the guardrail, they are the person who is supposed to look at things critically and say, you know, can I prove this beyond a reasonable doubt? And does it serve justice to prove this beyond a reasonable doubt? That's my entire argument on every case all the time.” — M. Esther Sherman
