Promoting Peace Conference

Since approximately 2021, M. Esther Sherman has helped with the Promoting Peace Conference, serving as a speaker or moderator each year. Her involvement has included working alongside Judge Annette Duncan to help bring together professionals and community members for conversations surrounding public safety, restorative practices, mental health, and other issues affecting the community.

In 2026, M. Esther Sherman moderated the “Myths on Masculinity” discussion, helping facilitate a conversation with local professionals about the challenges facing men and boys and their connections to mental health, trauma, public safety, and the justice system.

Those community conversations helped reinforce an approach focused not only on responding to problems, but finding solutions before they become a crisis. That same focus can be seen in her later work supporting restorative practices and helping develop Steele County's truancy initiatives with local schools.

Mentoring the Next Generation

For years, M Esther Sherman has informally mentored people interested in pursuing careers in law, particularly those who didn't have family or professional connections to help them navigate the process. Her mentoring has included helping prospective students enter law school and continuing to support them as they begin their legal careers.

Among those she has mentored is a former deputy who went on to become an Assistant U.S. Attorney. Another student she began mentoring as an undergraduate went on to law school and was preparing to clerk for the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Where someone is today doesn't have to determine where they will be tomorrow.

That's why early intervention, restorative practices, community programs, and mentorship matter. Accountability and opportunity don't have to be opposing ideas. Sometimes strengthening a community means helping someone find a different path—and supporting them as they discover where that path can lead.
